So we had an outstanding net on Tuesday, despite quite strange conditions. Some signals were well down on what we'd been experiencing lately, but at least we didn’t start with a cacophony of static crashes like the previous few weeks. | counted 20 stations on or listening this time - c’est bon, non? Stations heard : VK6IS VK6FN VK6KHZ VK5ET VK6PZT + Brief QSO VK6KD VK6QI + brief QSO VK2KI (using WA SDR for RX) + brief QSO Conditions variable with QSB making life difficult, thanks to all on the net last night especially to those that responded to my calls. night was a KX3 at 15W and an American Monitored my signal via VK6SR My setup for the Morse Equipment mini paddle. remote and the VK6QS SDR so knew my almost QRP setup was working to a degree. Sent out CQs at intervals and then responded to a few with the results in the log. Staying around until near the end of the session paid off and managed to catch up with Mark before he collapsed! Had a Post-Morseum with Max and Mark via AllStar through the VK6RLM Lesmurdie repeater on Wednesday morning to compare notes; | was happy to report | was not imagining things and | did indeed actually hear John VK5ET early on in the evening; thanks Mark. Synthesised AM and USB and LSB with 1kHz channel steps and for CW, transmits a tone 1 kHz above or below the selected frequency. it Running on 3x 6v lantern batteries which are starting to go flat; waiting on an adapter plug so! can run set from an 18V LION Ozito power tool battery. It had come down some time Possibly due to parrots swinging on it or biting the point at which it joined the impedance transformer. Anyway | simply stripped the insulation of the end and wrapped the conductor around the contact; worked fine but needs replacing. | was thinking of using stainless steel wire, but | heard its not suitable for antennas. [Hi Richard. Any thoughts? Glad you got your antenna and running again. For my home antennas | use 1.2mm stainless steel MIG wire. on my one-wavelength per arm into a double-extended Zepp, Vee Beam, | had used it which has now been converted which is about 100m long; so far the MIG wire has stayed where it should be (except when half of one of the huge gum trees at on end came down in a storm!). Because of its relatively low weight, there’s not much catenary, and because it’s so thin, it’s quite difficult to see unless the sun reflects off it. | have read comments about the resistance of MIG wire compared to copper - but how much lIoss is added to the radiation resistance component (ie the effective component that produces radiation of electromagnetic waves) | can’t tell. The challenges with thin stainless steel wire are: e it’s hard as buggery - it’s quite tricky to bend tightly - eg to wrap around BALUN terminals e you can’t solder it (I tried the suggestion in AR Magazine about using automotive rust converter (phosphoric acid) as a flux for stainless... doesn’t work) e it’s easy to kink when you're assembling. In the Other News section below, Owen Duffy VK2OMD has pointed me in the direction of stainless steel wire clamps to help overcome the soldering problem. I’ve ordered some on eBay. Thanks for your report - yes you had a nice signal into VK2. here 1 can start hearing my own Over VK2 signal on the VK6QS SDR South of Perth around 1000-1030z say, but with the noise here, | can’t hear the Sandgropers until a bit later. However things are different from SA - the D- layer Is still fading as the solar radiation disappears from the ionosphere, and as discussed in previous RagChews on the apparent one-way propagation phenomenon the mode of propagation is tricky to guess (for me) during the changing conditions. If | haven’t got enough to do, | should start watching the SDR as the band opens to see whether my signals get to WA before or after the Croweaters. Cheers]. This time, my humble mobile HF setting, combined with an accommodating weather and propagation, allowed me a few QRS QSOs on 80m, them while driving. most of | was using the left side of a dual paddle with my thumb, without the keyer, as if it were a straight key. | am getting used to it and it seems bumpy roads. more reliable and easier to control than a proper paddle on When over about 20wpm the thumb gets cramps, very slow speeds it is quite comfortable and accurate! ;-) but at Se adel | just acquired an Australian made 1940 antique Morse key, a WT8 AMP. Bulky and robust; it could have been designed by a tank maker. Its action IS quite rough compared to the gentle touch of a paddle and | thing it might be a challenging one for long sessions. We'll see how it behaves on the field soon enough. | was able to hear some VK6s very QRP; work them later on. At some wonder if you succeeded. Donald was very difficult for me to copy this week - Q 5 on QSB peaks and | received his report, but I struggled to get his callsign every time - luckily Donald was patient and hung in there until finally | got his callsign on a QSB peak. Interesting that your noise level was down at S1 when he was on; despite putting my double extended Zepp about 40m from my house, it's still picking up S9+ noise, which my cheap noise canceller may or may not deal with - but | certainly lose in the order of 200B of signal in the process. | have a nicer MF/1026 that | bought from a friend's estate, but unfortunately it arrived faulty - probably need to replace some of the FETs - another job on the list. Wow your thumb must be dexterous using a paddle as a straight key piano player perhaps? - | couldn't imagine getting the rhythm right on a paddle without the up and down floating wrist action of a key... but it certainly sounded excellent to me - good job. | use WT8 AMP keys here for both home and portable. I'd pulled them apart and cleaned both the pivot and the return spring, and on one | think | had to add a little brass screw head to get the spring pressure right. On my shack key I've added a large thin plastic clothing button between the knob and the lever arm (see last week's RagChew) - that makes a nice thumb rest which helos during the 5 to 6 hour long CQ QRS nets! Now I'm quite happy and used to the keys.... | suspect with practice and patience we can get used to anything. Yes | agree about the ZLs... and VK4s - very strange that we haven't heard any (1 did have a VK4 calling me a few weeks back, but he or she faded out and we couldn't crack the contact). Wundowie, while 4KHz down, Max hooked Ron VK6KHZ spiral up Peter VK6IS at at Yangebup was calling CQ, followed shortly by Richard VK6HRC at Padbury. VK2 to VK6 in QSB was RST 599 and VK6 to VK2 579 - approximately reciprocal considering the QSB and that | was using a (lossy) noise canceller on receive here. | used our WhatsApp CQ QRS group to advertise that | was calling CQ from VK6 and Richard VK6HRC at Padbury called me; terrific to have my second CW contact with Richard - the 15 Watts from his Elecraft KX3 and paddle sounding very good. Also From me, VK2KI Extended Zepp at Bowning antenna from using home my TS-50 and Double- and also using the VK1CM SDR at Farrer: While having dinner out on the patio with Ms Elizabeth, | sunk a peak at the VK1CM SDR and saw that David VK3DBD in Yakandandah was on calling CQ 20 minutes before the net started - keen to check for early propagation even before dark David? Once | came inside and cranked up my Kenwood TS-50 transceiver and got the noise canceller nulled | worked Claude VK1TE/m who was at home and packing his ute for the night’s travel to Tinderry NSW. rag-chew with Jordan VK3ACU | then had a long running 20 Watts from Meredith. | caught up with John VK5ET at Hope Valley and in parallel could hear David and Claude having a QSO about 1kHz up. arranged via WhatsApp; | then had another QSO with Jordan, pre- Jordan was running 1000mW crystal locked up on 3578kHz using his tiny Century Cent transmitter, and receiving on an SDR. Simple it may have been, and with QSB and noise | could only report RST 379, but boy that little transmitter sounded good - rock solid stable keying. A little while later | heard Allen VK5FD working Claude, and also heard Paul VK5PH at Glen Osmond calling and calling CQ with a solid RST 599 signal; | tried calling Paul, as did a couple of others, but it sounded like the noise got the better of him on the night. | also heard Peter VK7KPC from Evandale before hooking up again with Claude, this time heading South out of Canberra; meanwhile | heard David working John. | was then by a weak signal, that turned out to be Donald VK6JDM at Esperance. | received Donald’s signal report easily on a QSB peak, but at RST 289, really struggled to get his callsign - many many “AGN?” and “QRZ AGN?” later, | finally got it! Thanks for persisting Donald - although | probably should have used an SDR to pick up his callsign, I’m a purist and kept him honest by asking for all the repeats :) However, something interesting while watching Brookton. | knew he was using his home audio oscillator; | did notice Donald’s signal the VK6QS SDR at brew SSB transmitter and a keyed well his signal looked like it had two carriers on key-down - probably one on either side of the suppressed CW! carrier - ie double sideband Perhaps in his initial work to modify the transmitter for CW, the post- balanced-modulator filter out. he'd left This of course wouldn’t normally be picked up except by a spectrum analyser... or in this case a handydandy web SDR! | reckon by removing that extra sideband, least a 3dB improvement he’d get at in radiated power on the frequency desired. Elizabeth’s rescue package... home-made frangipane tart and a drop of ice cream! Next | heard John working Richard VK6PZT at Dalyellup, which from what | heard may have been the only SA to WA contact on the night. calling Richard after John - but | was being optimistic; exchange. | then managed | tried RST 169 and no to scrape in Peter VK6IS at Wundowie rather poor signals at RST 379 from me and 339 from Peter. - again, Claude then called in to report that he’d landed successfully at Tinderry - cancel SAR; meanwhile while listening to Claude, AllStar network. | heard Max VK6FN calling me on the | thought by now with some experience listening to two CW conversations at once on the net, surely | could talk on the radio and listen at the same time? Ha! My brain had other ideas... It really shows how good AM signals on 10m can be. The recording was made by John G3YPZ using his RCA AR-88 and 4-element Sirio 10m yagi at 7 metres high. The QSO, which started at 0930Z, lasted for about 39 minutes and signals climbed steadily in the first half of the recording, with the ones from John and Howarth peaking at R5 $9+10dB about 0945Z or 15 minutes into the recording. The other Gs had simpler antennas, so their signals peaked around S7 here. My signals also reached R5 S9+10dB levels with John and Howarth, who were both using old Heathkit DX-100s and AR-88s. Howarth had a 5-ele trapped yagi at about 15 metres. At this end | was using my TS5905S at 5W output, driving my FU-728 valve linear to about 120W output, and the homemade DC 2-ele spider quad up at 17 metres. John was receiving the other Gs on backscatter so their signals are very week. | think the slightly submarine sound from his AR-88 is because he has an old DSP filter on its audio output, to help with weak signals. However, you can clearly hear the phase distortion on my signals and the rolling QSB so typical of AM signals on 10m - which totally takes me back to my teenage years and having loads of fun listening on my old HRO the 1969/70 sunspot peak, using a dipole in the house loft. Recently we’ve looked at what appeared to be a Winter phenomenon, apparent one-way propagation between NSW and WA; the most recently we’ve looked at how static crashes appear to propagate differently than our more orderly (well mostly anyway) electromagnetic emissions. If anyone has a topic or two that you'd like to explore or share, please let me know mark.bosma@icloud.com . So this time I'd like to discuss an apparent paradox in my thinking about phased antennas. So my understanding is that all things being equal (ha!), feeding two correctly spaced antennas in- or out- of phase changes the radiation pattern, and (all things still being equal) could be considered to add about 3dB in gain in a direction dependant on the phase relationship, spacing, etc. Soa pair of dipoles might go from OdBd gain each to +3dBd single two element Yagi might go from 4dBd gain to 7dBd. Sure enough, when read me the Forward and Reflected Powers, we recognised that the he transmitter was ok (phew) but the antenna wasn’t. To preserve the MOS output devices, the power was reduced to minimum (around 100 Watts indicated - but that was into a high SWR - so it was probably much less), and | started thinking about antenna work, lower gain circular or multipolarisation versus higher gain vertical antennas etc! The station’s existing antenna is a pair of folded dipoles. In amateur circles, a pair of dipoles would be fed via a phasing harness - which allows the dipoles to be fed in phase if broadside gain is required, and by use of quarter wavelength line of the correct impedance, the pair can be matched to the impedance of the feed line. phasing All good so far - power goes in to the harness and is applied to both antennas to produce an increase in effective radiated power. However, phasing in the FM broadcasting world, it seems that instead of tricky harnesses, a thing called a Power Divider is used. /4 PZ Pi | |2-Zo ES 4 V2-Zo So in broadcast use, N-connectors are only used up to a maximum Watts; above that, hefty hardware is used for coaxial coupling. of 500 So let’s say out cable has N-connectors - limiting us to 500 Watts output power. However, the Community Radio station is licensed to transmit 1500 Watts effective radiated power - we either need to up our game and upgrade our cable connectors to allow more power, or increase the antenna gain. So let’s see what we can do with 500 Watts? If for instance we have a pair of folded dipoles fed with a power divider, and apply 500 Watts to the divider, the power from each of the two output ports is 250 Watts. 250 Watts to each of our dipoles. power of 3dB above 250 Watts - ie 500 Watts? our +3dBd We feed Doesn’t that give an effective radiated So we apply 500 Watts to array and get only 500 Watts effective radiated power! That doesn’t make sense - if we just fed a single dipole with 500 Watts, we’d get the same ERP. Ok, a quick check on the ZCG website. Scalar (Australian antenna manufacturer) That company sells an FM broadcast power divider with a 7/16” DIN style up to 1kW input, with 500 Watt N Connectors on the output - so the power divider really does reduce each output by half for a two port divider, one third for three port, etc. So what am! missing here. If | think of a phasing harness feeding a pair of dipoles in phase, I’d visualise the same RF voltage being applied to both antennas - ie the same output power is being applied to both antennas and our effective radiated power (in the gain direction) is about twice what we get if we apply the power to only one antenna. divider as is common Yet, using the power in broadcast - only half the power is applied to each antenna, so our +3dBd array gain is applied to only half the power - effectively cancelling the gain. Thought I'd Passed Ok, 84%. | fell down on some of the newer bits of kit which | have never used. Happy though! | have been checking out some of the other samples. Lost now on logarithms - so many years since | used them and no calculator then... only allowed a Slide rule. In- depth use of ABs also lost to time. Some of the maths, particularly AC theory maths, are also a distant memory. Used to think nothing of it. So Baz got me thinking (ouch!). | propose to start including a practice question from Jules’ pages at each level plus regulations in each week’s RagChew newsletter. The answers will be in the following week’s blurb. So why bother | hear you ask? e Personally, | think we should never stop being curious - knowledge is gained through curiosity. e Our Foundation and Standard members might be spurred to take on the next level - I’d get excited about that - might need to create a new certificate for them. e Things do change - there’s material in here that’s new compared to the (written) tests | did in the early 70s. e You may actually have forgotten some of this material, and a soft reminder does no harm. e Like a crossword in the newspaper (or Wordle or Morsle on your phone), this might be just what we need to encourage readers to: © ° look forward to each week’s RagChew actually skim through each one, hunting for each week’s questions or answers from the previous week (perhaps | should disguise them and move them around each week)? As an example of how things change or get forgotten - here’s one | made up: e What is the maximum CW power allowed for an advanced amateur station? ° 120 Watts mean ° 100 Watts output 150 Watts DC input ° © output 400 Watts output I've heard our net members say they run the maximum 150 Watts input and I’ve heard others say they run 400 Watts output - who’s right? Perhaps you'll be surprised to learn that the regulation now says that the maximum power allowed is Py = 120 Watts; mean Py - what the hell is that? Well, Py is the power output. So how do we measure mean power | wonder? If you take the average five letter word (eg PARIS) with a space after, if my adding-up is correct, that takes 47 dits time-wise to send 22 dits worth of carrier (dahs being three dits long). So to get a mean output power of 120 Watts for that word, by my rough calculations we’d need to put out 256 Watts on key down. But when the Radio Inspector (ha - remember those days!) is looking over your shoulder when you're sending non-Farnsworth power indication showing QRS and she sees the output 256 Watts on key-down from your Heathkit (those were the days!) SB-1000, do you think they'll be thinking of mean power? And what if you’re running Farnsworth QRS - ie sending each letter at 15 to 20 wpm and allowing a 700ms to 1 second gap between letters... add up the dots in the gap and see how the mean power regulation now doesn’t make any sense at all. And what if you consider it from the perspective of Electro-magnetic Radiation safety, where the means are established over long body exposure times - ie minutes or hours - wow! Not suggesting you run any more than what your output power meter tells you as a rough guide, but it’s an interesting question to think about - HI! This Week’s Quiz. So tune around and call anyone you hear, or find yourself a quiet spot in the 3540kHz to 3570kHz segment and start calling CQ QRS at about 75% of the speed you're comfortable receiving at; hopefully responders will match (or send slower to their comfort level). When you hear someone slower. new, please match their sending speed - or The person you're replying to may not be as deft on the decoding as you - it may be their first ever CW QSO - remember your first? Lather of sweat, key that refuses to send that you tell it, brain that refuses to decode those complex someone “AGN? letters that were right there half an hour ago, etc! And if is sending too fast to comfortably copy - “PSE RPT PSE QRS” or PSE QRS” will make life easier for everyone.... and might just encourage other listeners to have a go themselves. The other thing to remember - most operators are writing down what they hear... so when you put it back to them, expect a delay while they read your words of wisdom, before replying. The aim is to give everyone a go at contacting others - no-one owns their calling frequency on this net... even Monsieur trois cing cing cing :) So unlike working DX, if you hear someone signing of - jump in and call - doesn’t matter who was first on the frequency - we’re all good mates on this net.... and besides, at the speed we’re sending, after a QSO will have forgotten who was first! most of us If you really want to move off frequency (eg because of a spurious switch mode power supply signal that’s just drifted into the conversation), you could try sending an abridged callsign of the person you’re after, followed by “UP 5” or “DN 5” then K; then call that person on the designated frequency and keep your fingers crossed, they may have understood you and followed... or not.
